Image
Logo image courtesy of SAP As SAP’s Sapphire 2025 conference wrapped up in Orlando, it was with a message that’s loud and clear: Business AI isn’t coming; it’s already here, and SAP wants to be the platform that makes it tangible, safe, and enterprise-grade. From major announcements around AI partnerships and cloud data orchestration to real-time intelligent applications and developer-friendly innovations, SAP didn’t just talk about their view on digital transformation; they gave it structure, context, and an operational plan. The question now is, are enterprises ready to execute? So, let’s unpack what happened at Sapphire 2025, beyond the surface gloss, to understand what SAP’s AI-first future means for business leaders, developers, and the broader enterprise ecosystem. AI as the Operating System for the Enterprise So, the core theme this year?  AI not as a bolt-on, but as an operating system for how enterprises run. And it appears this is not just marketing. It’s backed b...

SAP and Databricks: Unlocking a New Era of Business AI with Open Data

Image
Just a few days ago, SAP announced a strategic partnership with Databricks , signaling a bold step towards a more open and AI-driven future for enterprise data management. According to both companies, this collaboration aims to break traditional data silos by enabling seamless integration between SAP Business Data Cloud and Databricks' AI and analytics capabilities. The goal? To empower businesses with more agile, intelligent, and efficient AI-driven decision-making. A Unified Data Landscape At the heart of this partnership is SAP’s Business Data Cloud , a new platform designed to unify data across various SAP and non-SAP systems. By integrating with Databricks' AI and machine learning (ML) ecosystem, SAP aims at providing enterprises with enhanced capabilities to analyze, process, and utilize their data more effectively. This means businesses can tap into the full potential of their enterprise data without complex data extraction and movement processes. In the words of SAP C...

Hadoop Platforms: The Elephants in the Room

Image
"When there’s an elephant in the room introduce him" -Randy Paush It is common that when speaking about Big Data two major assumptions often take place: One : Hadoop comes to our minds right by its side, and many times are even considered synonyms, which they are not. While Big Data is the boilerplate concept that refers to the process of handling enormous amounts of data coming in different forms  (structured and unstructured), independent of the use use of a particular technology or tool, Hadoop is in fact, a specific open source technology for dealing with these sort of voluminous data sets. But before we continue, and as a mind refresher, let’s remind ourselves what is Hadoop with their own definition: The Apache Hadoop software library is a framework that allows for the distributed processing of large data sets across clusters of computers using simple programming models. It is designed to scale up from single servers to thousands of machines, each offering ...

‘D’ of Things: A look back into 2017 and forward to 2018

Image
(Image by  Elisa Riva ) As we inevitably approach the end of the year ーa year marked with many important advances in all areas of the data management spaceー I just can’t avoid thinking with expectation and excitement what should be there just around the corner for 2018. If 2017 was all but boring, 2018 looks like another promising one, no less fast and competitive than 2017. But after what Niels Bohr once said : Prediction is very difficult, especially if it's about the future. I will avoid making big prediction statements and instead, take a look at some relevant things happened this ending year and what will be interesting to follow closely for next year. Still, feel free to call me out next year on what I missed. A look back at 2017 2017 has been a year full with exciting events and news and yet the following events are, in my view, those that deserve much more attention due to the transformational nature of the industry. So here, and in no particular orde...

SAP Data Hub and the Rise of a New Generation of Analytics Solutions

Image
“Companies are looking for a unified and open approach to help them accelerate and expand the flow of data across their data landscapes for all users. SAP Data Hub bridges the gap between Big Data and enterprise data, enabling companies to build applications that extract value from data across the organization, no matter if it lies in the cloud or on premise, in a data lake or the enterprise data warehouse, or in an SAP or non-SAP system.” This is part of what Bernd Leukert, SAP’s member of the executive board for products & innovation mentioned during SAP’s Big Data Event held at the SAP Hudson Yards office in New York City as part of the new SAP Data Hub announcement and one that, in my view, marked the beginning of a small yet important trend within analytics consisting on the launch or renewed and integrated software platforms for analytics, BI and data science. This movement, marked by other important announcements including Teradata’s New Analytics Platform as well ...
